Welcome to the first episode of the Solo Hunter Diaries, where I take you into the heart of solo PvP. This series captures the raw adrenaline of hunting alone, with every decision and maneuver coming down to game knowledge, player skill and instinct.

In Episode 1, I start out in a wormhole flying a pvp Astero.

Solo PVP vs. Fleet PVP

As this is Episode 1 of the Solo Hunter Diaries, I would like to talk a little bit about Solo pvp vs. fleet pvp.

A lot of players, myself included, finds fleet pvp a lot more forgiving than solo. While your role in the fleet is important, be it DPS, tackle or logi, you’re still a number in the machine. If you fail to lock up a target and don’t get any DPS or EWAR on it, the entire operation isn’t going to go sideways.

However, when you’re out flying solo, suddenly it’s just you against your opponent. While the ship you’re both flying does matter, at the end of the day it comes down to your experience verses their experience. For example, you could bite a bit above what your ship should be able to kill and still win if your opponent has never pvp’d.

Solo Hunter Diaries is Practice

So, why am I out killing Herons and Ventures? First, undo popular belief, they’re not solely newbie ships. Everyone has the ability to fly them and many experienced players choose to take out a Heron that costs 1 million ISK to explore with instead of a 100 million plus Astero.

It’s just that these ships have low skill thresholds and are offered to players during the career missions to get them started with life. That’s how they became “newbro” ships.

Second, I’m a fleet FC (fleet commander) and line pilot. I have been since I started playing back in 2020. While I’m brilliant in a fleet, I lack skills solo. So starting small and working my way up makes sense. I need to get muscle memory going and stop getting tunnel vision in the fights.

Lastly, I get the PVP shakes pretty badly. Because I record my sessions so I can make these videos, I need to be able to click on the modules instead of using hotkeys. When you’re shaking like a leaf, you can easily miss those modules!

So these are the 3 main reasons for this series, and why in the first several episodes you’ll find me solely killing explo frigates and Ventures. Don’t worry, things get more exciting down the road!

And now, it’s my pleasure to link the Solo Hunter Diaries: Episode 1.
